Pharma Packaging – Innovation Key to Cost Savings

Fredclay asked:

In the pharmaceutical industry, while the status of the packaging function might only be that of an appendix, if properly utilized, it can be an invaluable resource of innovation and cost savings.

During the whole process of production, the packaging people are roped in only after the product research and development teams are over with their jobs. And at times they’re brought in even past the stage of product engineering. Naturally, by this stage, the schedule gets tight and there’s barely time left for meeting deadlines, leave aside innovation.

Innovation might not be an invention but just a new way of doing something. And as Peter Drucker identified, it’s one of the only two basic business functions, the other being marketing, it has has been known to result in improved quality, reduced labor costs, improved production processes, reduced pharmaceutical packaging materials, reduced energy consumption, etc. all of which spell profitability.

However, if packaging is only considered as an afterthought, the possibility of innovation is lost somewhere, and consequently its benefits too.

Leveraging Integration for Innovation

Experts believe that integrating the packaging function with the research and development function requires only a few tweaks. To breed innovation it’s important to allow the packaging function more influence within R&D. This is so because when the two functions work jointly, it will enable the packaging department to better help with quality initiatives, continuous enhancement programs, costs reduction, etc.

Also, when the packaging department is aware of the projects that are underway including the high priority ones, it can prepare in advances and has the time necessary to think and innovate, and better use their pharmaceutical packaging equipment.

Further, in addition to just an influence within R&D, a more innovative set-up could include merging R&D and packaging. Because a lot of cost reduction, quality, and continuous improvement depends on packaging, so including packaging within the whole process sounds like a better option.

Unfolding The Future, inc., is a company that takes pride in transforming the way its products are used on day to day basis. Due to the lack of innovative ideas, the company has suffered a dramatic loss within the last two quarters. With innovation in mind, the packaging department of Unfold The Future, inc., has completed a new design for the sugar free mints due for market launch in April. The proposal is so ground-breaking that competing companies have yet to come up with such ideal design, thus making this proposal the most important opportunity for regaining the companys lost shares.
The new idea for packaging the sugar free mints lineup was to produce a package that was slim and unique at the same time. The general consumer looks for a mint product that could be carried around with them without taking much space in their pocket. With the (.44 oz) metal tin package, Unfold the Future, inc. will become one the first company to offer such a compact size. Additional materials like paper and plastic were suggested for packaging but they had far greater flaws compared to the metal tin. Paper is not a durable enough material to sustain too much abuse in pockets and purses while keeping its original box shape. At the same time, plastic doesnt offer the same kind of style and attraction the metal tin can achieve. The strong metal case can keep the mints safe in most inconvenient environments without altering the taste of the product and at the same time provides a stylish appeal to widespread customers. The second and equally important aspect of the proposed design is the uniqueness of how the package opens and closes. With the innovative slide on and slide off cap, the package is more convenient and stylish than the company has ever produced. A little slide of a thumb opens and closes the container and provides easy access to the mints. Each tin will contain sixty mini mints in the (.44 oz) container and maintain the same price as the (1.76 oz) packages. The compacts size and sugar-free concept in tradeoff will give the company an opportunity to sell less for more. The basic design will remain the same for all the sugar-free mints and the only thing that alters will be the color for various flavors. It is imperative to keep the colors identical to the non-sugar free products in order to keep the process more convenient for the consumers and the workers. The product is guaranteed to attract consumers attention on the store shelves due to the proposed packaging ideas provided. By accepting this design proposal, Unfold The Future inc., will be able to offer the same product as its competitor but market it with a packaging design to lead the future sales in the breath mint industry.

well its May 23, I still haven’t received the item yet. USPS already stopped by today. I’m located in Dallas, TX. So if the package was Manifested on 21 then it should’ve already arrived here in 2 days, correct? Should I be worried?
I understand their system, thing that I don’t understand it the how do they update their tracking system. Dates to not match. Manifest happend on May 22, but they still list it as May 21.. why? And it says it finally sent out to USPS(its in Dallas post office) which came up on May 23 night on tracking system but they still put May 21 next to it. Well I still haven’t receive the mail yet. I think this is one of the worst service. Why doesn’t company just ship it via USPS in first place…

How should I answer my Senator’s response (below) to my plea that she vote against the bailout? ?

serenely, soMEone asked:

Dear Mr. [soMEone]

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. I welcome your thoughts and comments on this issue.

On September 19, 2008, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson announced a plan by the Bush Administration to stabilize the financial services sector of the economy. This plan included broad authority for the Treasury Secretary to purchase troubled financial instruments with very limited oversight and few protections for taxpayers.

In July, I voted against a similar proposed bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac because it did not provide taxpayer protection and limits on executive compensation for a government owned entity. For the same reasons, I was not willing to support the Administrations initial proposal, and I encouraged my colleagues to continue work on a plan that would protect taxpayers, provide strict oversight, and place limits on the benefits to executives who accept taxpayer assistance.

In the days following the Treasury Secretarys announcement, concerns about the danger to the broader economy deepened. The high-profile failure of numerous financial institutions caused the commercial lending market to accumulate and hold cash. The credit markets effectively froze, making it difficult for consumers to obtain loans for purchases such as homes and automobiles. The lack of lending in these areas began to place further pressure on the troubled housing market and threatened to spread deeper into the economy. Similarly, many small and mid-sized businesses were finding it difficult to obtain financing to meet their payroll obligations and purchase inventory. Many cities were entering the bond market and getting no bids, even with AAA ratings. The current liquidity crisis still poses a real potential for significant job losses. After consulting with numerous financial experts, small businesses, and bankers in Texas, it became clear to me that normal commercial lending activity would not resume without action by Congress.

Despite this realization, I was still not inclined to support the Paulson plan. After weeks of negotiation, however, a bi-partisan compromise was reached. While there are provisions in the bill that I do not favor and would not have drafted, overall the need for action to stabilize the market and to protect the retirement savings of millions of Americans weighed heavily on my mind. Ultimately, I supported the Senate bill along with 73 of my colleagues. The bill we passed was a major improvement over the initial plan announced by Secretary Paulson.

We increased the deposit insurance cap from $100,000 to $250,000 so that families will have added protection for savings and retirement accounts. While the initial proposal authorized up to $700 billion to purchase distressed assets, the measure we passed takes a more cautious approach, initially authorizing $250 billion and requiring the approval from Congress and the President for additional funding. Importantly, the bill we passed includes restrictions on the benefits received by executives whose companies are selling some of their distressed assets to the government. In return for purchasing the assets, taxpayers will obtain an ownership stake in the companies. Many leading economists believe that the real estate market will turn around in the foreseeable future and government owned properties and assets will be sold at a profit. A provision in this bill that I supported requires any profits realized to be placed in the nations treasury to reduce the deficit. If, however, after five years the government is facing a loss in the program, the President must submit a plan to Congress recommending how the money will be recouped from financial services companies. I believe that these protections are a dramatic improvement over the Administrations initial proposal.

The bill passed by the Senate included an important package of tax policy provisions. One of these provisions is an extension of the state and local sales tax deduction, which is a matter of fairness for states like Texas that do not have a state income tax. The average Texan will save $520 when they file their federal income tax forms next year. We also shielded low and middle-income taxpayers from higher taxes associated with the flawed alternative minimum tax (AMT) and included tax incentives to spur energy production and innovation including the wind energy production tax credit and the research and development tax credit.

As Texans, we have learned to take responsibility for our actions and being asked to pay for the mistakes of others is something many, including myself, find deeply troubling. However, after careful deliberation, I believe that the risks associated with doing nothing outweighed the risk of passing a less than perfect bill that nevertheless includes important protections for taxpayers. Economic evidence clearly suggested the problems were spreading into the broader economy. That i

I need someone to proof read this?

CJess asked:

The following is a brief paper I wrote for my Economics class:

Under the direction of President George W. Bush, anti-trade and anti-business sentiment was on the rise. As the countrys economic problems have gotten worse, the pro-market theme has not so much become less as disappeared. The administration has been forced to swallow what remained of its commitment to market forces and deregulation with a $250bn bank recapitalization.

It seems safe to assume that US finance will change profoundly as this crisis works itself out, regardless of whom the country chooses as its next president in the upcoming election. Simply restoring the stringency of some earlier regime is not an option. Better regulation is needed, but history shows that designing it will be difficult. A new approach to financial regulation would hardly signify the end of American capitalism.

In the short term, the recession will shrink the tax base and worsen the excess of spending over revenues. The eventual bill for the current rescue package is likely to be less than $700bn, since some value will be recovered from the assets and equity that the Treasury acquires. American capitalism would surely retain its distinctive vitality, which springs from a zeal for competition, innovation, and sheer hard work that seems bred in the bone.

Does this seem OK?
It’s supposed to be one page, but it falls a little short. Is there a way I can expand this?
